A SCENE FROM THE STERN

This sunset photo from the stern of JOIDES Resolution is one of my favorite photos I took in the South Atlantic Ocean in 2022. I shifted the image from a sunset to looking out at a daytime sky, filled with clouds. While standing on the red-colored deck behind the yellow railing, one can look across the ocean, or towards the activity on the ship. This quilt welcomes you to Stories from the South Atlantic Ocean, a selection of scientific ocean drilling activities from JOIDES Resolution during Expedition 390 (South Atlantic Transect I), shared through this quilt collection.

Quilt measures 55.5 inches tall by 33 inches wide and was completed on May 17, 2023.

This sunset photo from the stern of JOIDES Resolution is one of my favorite photos I took in the South Atlantic Ocean in 2022. In looking for a quilt to start off my scientific ocean drilling quilt collection, I really liked this view at sea but decided to shift the image from a sunset to looking out at a daytime sky, filled with clouds. This decorative quilt welcomes you to Stories from the South Atlantic Ocean, a selection of scientific ocean drilling activities from JOIDES Resolution during Expedition 390 (South Atlantic Transect I), shared through this quilt collection.

The deck of the ship is red in color and represented at the bottom of the quilt. The hull on the outside of the ship is black, noted with the black stripe at the top of the deck. The safety railing around the ship is bright yellow and easily seen no matter what time of day. The photo above I took while looking out the back of the ship (the stern).

The quilt is an original design. The fabric for the clouds is a 3 Cats Shweshwe, a Da Gama Textile manufactured in South Africa and a nod to the Cape Town port JOIDES Resolution departed from/returned to. The quilt has layers of appliqué with the railing on top of the sky/sea, and the life ring over the yellow safety rail. The rope is added to represent the rope attached to the actual life ring hanging on the ship. Quilt measures 55.5 inches tall by 33 inches wide and was completed on May 17, 2023.
